- Avoid clutters, small furniture, loose electrical wires, and anything else that might cause someone to fall.
- Arrange or remove extra furniture so there is proper space for walking.
- There should not be any bumps on the floor to avoid falls.
- Avoid using carpets as they may increase the chances of falls
- Avoid spillage of water on the floor or wipe up the water or any other fluid from the floor.
- Stairs are a risky area for falling. Hand rails must be installed on both sides of the stairs.
- Use non-skid mats in the bath and shower
- While walking the person should be wearing proper fitted shoes or non-slippery chappals.
- Install grab bars in the shower and near the toilet
- Provide adequate lighting in every room and stairway while walking inside or outside the home to avoid falls.
- Place nightlights in kitchen, bathroom and stairs.
- Keep thing handy or close to the person, like the food or clothing such that the older person won’t be using a stool or ladder to take out the things.
- If the person is not able to walk properly, provide them with assistive devices used for walking such as cane or a walker.
